INTRODUCTION
Every church has its own unique journey in the process of growth and development. Some churches begin with a building that has already been prepared, while others grow through large-scale ministries. There are also churches that begin with a simple desire to reach souls for Christ. The same is true of Gereja Bethel Indonesia (GBI) PRJ Sion Sumut, located in Dusun Pearaja, Sion Sibulbulon, Parlilitan District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency, North Sumatra. This church emerged through a long process that began with ministry and the building of relationships with the local community.
The pioneering ministry of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut was initiated by Rev. Dr. Syaiful Hamzah, S.Th., M.Th., together with his wife, Pdm. Tiolida Sihotang, S.PdK. Since 2010, they have regularly traveled from Jakarta to Parlilitan for ministry. Despite various limitations, they continued to make visits, conduct worship services, preach the Word of God, pray, and minister to families. Year after year, their relationships with the local community continued to grow. Trust began to develop, and the seed of ministry gradually grew into a church ministry in the midst of the Pearaja community.
The journey of this ministry was not always easy. The long distance between Jakarta and Parlilitan, limited facilities, financial needs, and various challenges in ministry became part of the process that had to be faced. Nevertheless, each challenge became part of the formation and maturation of the ministry. The desire to have a place of worship was eventually pursued through the purchase of private land in Pearaja in January 2022. Subsequently, in December 2022, the laying of the foundation stone was held, marking the beginning of the construction of a place of worship for the congregation and for ministry to the local community.
The history of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut is not merely a story about the construction of a church building. It is also a story of faith, sacrifice, perseverance, relationships with the community, the growth of the congregation, and faithfulness in carrying out the calling of ministry. In 2025, the ministry developed into a congregation that held regular worship services, children's ministry, youth ministry, Bible study, and the formation of a local ministry team. Subsequently, through the Letter of Registration issued in April 2025, GBI PRJ Sion Sumut was formally recorded as a branch of GBI JPS Jakarta. This history serves as a record of the ministry's journey and a testimony to God's faithfulness and guidance throughout the process.
CHAPTER I
THE BEGINNING OF THE PIONEERING MINISTRY AND THE JOURNEY OF SERVICE
Pioneering a church is a long process that requires faith, faithfulness, sacrifice, and perseverance. The same was true of the early journey of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut in Pearaja, which did not begin with the establishment of a church building. The ministry began through journeys from Jakarta to Parlilitan, building relationships with the local community, visiting families, and proclaiming the Word of God. Each visit became an opportunity to know the people and plant the seeds of ministry. Through this simple process, relationships, trust, and a desire to establish GBI ministry in the midst of the Pearaja community gradually developed.
1.1 The Beginning of Ministry Visits
The ministry journey of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut began around 2010, when there was not yet an officially established GBI church in Dusun Pearaja. Rev. Dr. Syaiful Hamzah, together with his wife, Pdm. Tiolida Sihotang, began making ministry visits from Jakarta to Parlilitan. These visits were carried out regularly through various forms of ministry, including evangelistic revival services, family ministry, prayer, and spiritual guidance. The desire to reach souls became the primary motivation behind every ministry journey they undertook.
In the early days, the ministry was carried out under various limitations. There were no large groups or special facilities to support their journeys. They even rented private vehicles to make the long journey from Jakarta to Parlilitan. In 2011, Rev. Dr. Syaiful and his wife once traveled by Mio motorcycle from Jakarta to Parlilitan as a means of carrying out their ministry. That journey became an important experience in the pioneering process. Gradually, the local community began to know them, relationships with families were established, and the ministry began to be welcomed within the community.
1.2 Ministry from House to House
Before having a permanent place of worship, the ministry of GBI PRJ Sion was carried out through direct relationships with the local community. Rev. Dr. Syaiful Hamzah and his wife visited people's homes, ministered to families, prayed for those who needed help, and shared the Word of God on various occasions. The ministry was carried out simply and sincerely. Each visit became an opportunity to understand the lives of the people more closely. Through these encounters, relationships gradually developed, and the community slowly became familiar with the ministry that had been brought from Jakarta to Pearaja.
This ministry demonstrated that pioneering a church does not always begin with a building, but with relationships between people that are built through love and sincerity. The trust of the community cannot be gained through only one or two visits; it requires time and patience. Therefore, the ministry was carried out gradually, with an effort to understand the lives, needs, customs, and culture of the local community. Through this process, relationships became stronger, trust began to grow, and the ministry found its place within the life of the Pearaja community.
1.3 Becoming Part of the Community
When Rev. Syaiful Hamzah first came to Parlilitan, he came from an environment that was different from that of the local community. Differences in language, background, life experiences, and ministry practices became part of the initial challenges in building relationships. However, these differences did not become a reason to maintain distance. Instead, they became an opportunity to learn and to know the community more closely. Together with his wife, Rev. Syaiful sought to be present in the midst of the community with an open and humble attitude, while showing respect for the local environment and its traditions.
In building relationships, they visited people's homes, talked and spent time with members of the community, and took every opportunity to understand the local social life. They also sought to understand the customs and culture of the Batak people, which are an important part of everyday life. This process required time, patience, and sincerity. Through continued interaction and personal encounters, relationships grew closer and trust began to develop. Eventually, the presence of the ministry was no longer regarded as something unfamiliar, but became part of the life of the Pearaja community.
1.4 Acceptance in 2019
One of the important moments in the journey of the ministry took place in 2019. After years of making visits, building relationships, and serving the community in Parlilitan, Rev. Dr. Syaiful Hamzah was given the Nahampun clan name by members of the local community. This event became a memorable part of the ministry's journey, as it reflected the increasingly close relationship between the minister and the community. The giving of a clan name was not merely the adoption of a name, but also formed part of a process of acceptance and respect within Batak society, where family and kinship ties hold significant importance.
In Batak society, a clan name carries important meaning as an identity and as part of one's family and kinship relationships. Therefore, the acceptance of the Nahampun clan name became one indication of the social and cultural acceptance of Rev. Dr. Syaiful Hamzah and his family within the local community. The event was also a fruit of relationships that had been built over many years through ministry, visits, and personal encounters with the people. The moment in 2019 thus became an important part of the pioneering journey of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut in Pearaja.

CHAPTER II
THE PURCHASE OF LAND AND THE LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION STONE
After years of ministry and building relationships with the local community, a growing desire emerged to have a permanent place for worship and ministry activities. This desire was not merely about the need for a building, but also represented a step toward establishing GBI ministry more visibly and meaningfully in the Pearaja community. Through prayer, careful consideration, and the courage to take action, a piece of land was eventually prepared to serve as a place of ministry. This stage became an important part of the pioneering history of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut.
2.1 The Desire to Have a Place of Ministry
After years of making ministry journeys from Jakarta to Parlilitan, the desire to have a permanent place of ministry grew stronger. Until that time, ministry had been carried out through family visits, worship services, prayer, and various spiritual activities among the local community. However, the need for a place that could serve as a center for fellowship became increasingly apparent. It was hoped that such a place could be used for worship, preaching the Word of God, congregational development, children's and youth ministry, and as a space where the community could experience fellowship and church ministry in a more organized manner.
This desire eventually became a step of faith. The place of ministry was not viewed merely as a physical building, but as a means of supporting the continuity of ministry in Pearaja. After a long process, a decision was made to prepare a piece of land for the ministry of Gereja Bethel Indonesia. This decision marked the beginning of a new stage in the journey of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut. From a ministry that had previously been carried out through visits and from one place to another, a vision began to emerge for a place that could become a home for the congregation and for the ministry of God.
2.2 The Purchase of Land in 2022
In January 2022, Rev. Dr. Syaiful Hamzah purchased a privately owned piece of land in Pearaja, Parlilitan District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency, North Sumatra. The land was then prepared for the ministry of Gereja Bethel Indonesia, particularly as the site planned for the construction of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut. The purchase process was carried out legally and was known to the local authorities. In this process, Mr. Jumrin Nahampun, the Head of Pearaja Village, also assisted in various matters related to the land transaction.
The land, which had previously been part of the property owned by the family of Mr. Jumrin Nahampun, was subsequently made available to support the plan for the construction of the ministry site. The purchase of the land became one of the significant milestones in the pioneering journey of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut. After years of ministry through visits and house-to-house fellowship, having a piece of land became a concrete step toward establishing a permanent place of ministry. This step provided the foundation for the next stage, namely the laying of the foundation stone and the construction of the place of worship.
2.3 The Laying of the Foundation Stone
In December 2022, the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja was held. Rev. Syaiful Hamzah, together with his wife and ministry team, returned from Jakarta to participate in and lead the event. The ceremony was attended by the Head of Pearaja Village and village officials, hamlet officials, the raja huta, community leaders, representatives of the local community, and ministry partners from GBI Amborgang. The presence of various elements of the community became an important part of the construction journey. The laying of the foundation stone marked the beginning of the construction of a GBI ministry site in Pearaja.
The event was conducted with respect for the cultural values and way of life of the local community. For the church, the laying of the foundation stone represented more than the beginning of a physical construction project; it was also a significant moment of faith in the journey of the ministry. A piece of land that had previously remained unused was now being prepared to become a place of worship, fellowship, and ministry. This event became one of the important milestones in the history of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut, as the desire that had been nurtured through many years of ministry began to take tangible form.
2.4 Construction as a Step of Faith
Following the laying of the foundation stone, construction of the GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja building began gradually. The work started with the construction of the foundation, followed by the installation of wall beams and roof-support columns. Each stage was carried out according to the resources and circumstances available at the time. The construction became part of a ministry journey that required not only planning, but also perseverance and a willingness to continue moving forward. What began as simple construction work became the beginning of a building that was expected to serve worship and ministry activities in the future.
The construction process, however, was not without challenges. Limited financial resources meant that the work could not be completed at once and had to proceed gradually according to the resources available. Nevertheless, the work that had already begun remained a sign that GBI PRJ Sion Sumut had a place being prepared for the future. The building became part of a journey of faith and hope, while also serving as a reminder that ministry is built through a process of patience, sacrifice, perseverance, and faithfulness in facing various limitations.
CHAPTER III
CHALLENGES, THE CHANGE OF WORSHIP LOCATIONS, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF REGULAR WORSHIP
The ministry journey of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut was not always easy. After construction of the church building began, various challenges had to be faced, both in terms of construction funding and the ongoing ministry among the local community. Since the building had not yet been completed, a temporary location had to be found for worship services. Despite these circumstances, the ministry continued, and various efforts were made to ensure that congregational fellowship could continue. Through the process of changing locations and facing various challenges, a way was eventually opened for the ministry to have a place where regular worship could be conducted.
3.1 Challenges in the Construction Process
As the construction of the church building progressed, various challenges began to emerge. The financial resources required to continue the construction remained substantial, while the available financial capacity was very limited. As a result, the construction could not be completed at once and had to proceed according to the resources available. This became part of the challenges faced by the ministry. Nevertheless, the work that had already begun remained a source of hope that, in due time, construction could continue and the site could be used to support the life of the congregation and the ministry of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut.
In addition to the challenges related to physical construction, the ministry journey was also accompanied by various relational dynamics involving parties connected to the ministry. Differences in perspectives, matters of trust, and various difficult experiences became part of the pioneering process. These circumstances required patience, understanding, and a commitment to maintaining good relationships with different parties. The challenges that arose did not bring the ministry to an end. Instead, they became part of the process of learning and maturing in carrying out ministry within the local community.
3.2 Searching for a Place of Worship
Because the church building could not yet be completed, efforts were made in 2025 to find a temporary location that could be used for worship. A house was rented and prepared as a place of worship. The house was renovated so that it could more appropriately accommodate church activities. Various worship equipment, including musical instruments, a pulpit, and other necessary items, were brought from Jakarta. The renovation cost approximately IDR 20,000,000. After the preparations were completed, the house began to be used for worship services and various ministry activities.
The use of the house as a temporary place of worship became an important step in maintaining the continuity of the ministry. Although the planned church building was not yet completed, congregational fellowship could continue. The house became a place where people gathered, prayed, worshiped God, and built their life together as a congregation. This experience demonstrated that the continuity of ministry does not depend solely on having a permanent church building. As long as a suitable place was available, ministry could continue and the life of the congregation could keep developing.
3.3 A Door That Closed
In the course of the ministry, an objection was raised by one of the family members of the house owner regarding the use of the house as a place of worship. As a result, the ministry once again had to search for another location. This became another challenge, especially because the rented house had already undergone renovation and had been prepared through considerable effort and sacrifice. Nevertheless, the ministry chose to maintain peace and respect the wishes of the owner's family. This decision was part of an effort to preserve good relationships and avoid circumstances that could disrupt the ministry.
Because of this situation, the search for a new place of worship began once again. Moving to another location was not easy, especially because various worship equipment and other necessities had already been prepared. However, this situation did not cause the ministry to stop. Rev. Syaiful, together with his wife and the congregation, continued to seek a solution that would allow worship services to continue. Through this process, an opportunity eventually arose to meet another family who was willing to provide a place for the ministry of GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja to continue.
3.4 Help Through the Barasa Family
In these circumstances, Rev. Dr. Syaiful, together with his wife and several members of the congregation, continued searching for a house that could be used as a place of worship. With the assistance and guidance of Mr. Jumrin Nahampun, the Head of Pearaja Village, they were eventually introduced to the Barasa family. The meeting continued late into the night and became an important part of the ministry's journey. After discussions were held, the Barasa family opened their home to be used as a place of worship for GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja. Their willingness to provide the house became a significant help in ensuring the continuity of the ministry at that time.
What made the occasion especially meaningful was that the house could be used without rental fees. The Barasa family also helped prepare and renovate the house so that it would be more suitable for use as a place of worship. The Barasa family home then became the place of worship for GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja at the time this history was written. This event became an important part of the ministry's journey: when the previous location could no longer be used, another place became available. Through these circumstances, the ministry once again received a place to worship, build the congregation, and continue its ministry among the people of Pearaja.
CHAPTER IV
CONGREGATIONAL GROWTH AND THE ORGANIZATION OF MINISTRY
After going through various challenges and changes in worship locations, the ministry of GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja entered a new stage in 2025. The ministry, which had previously been carried out mainly through visits and fellowship, began to develop into regular congregational worship services. The presence of children, youth, local families, and ministry supporters became part of the growth of the congregation. At the same time, various ministry activities began to be organized more systematically. The formation of a local ministry team also became an important step in ensuring that the life of the congregation could continue to be nurtured and developed in a sustainable manner.
4.1 The First Sunday Worship Service
After a long process, the First Sunday Worship Service of GBI PRJ Sion, Pearaja–Parlilitan Branch, was held on Sunday, March 23, 2025. The worship service took place in a simple setting, yet it held great significance in the journey of the ministry. Approximately 25 people attended the first service, consisting of families from around Pearaja, children, youth, and ministry supporters who had previously become acquainted with the ministry. Their presence marked the beginning of a congregational life in which people could gather regularly for worship and fellowship.
That day became an important milestone in the pioneering history of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut. The ministry, which for many years had been carried out through visits, prayer, family ministry, and relationships with the community, had finally developed into regular congregational worship. Although the service was held in a simple place and under modest circumstances, it marked the beginning of a new stage in the ministry. From this simple fellowship, a congregation began to take shape and grow together in faith and ministry.
4.2 Bible Study
After regular Sunday worship services began, Bible Study and Cell Group meetings were also conducted every Tuesday evening. These gatherings became an important means for the congregation to study the Word of God more systematically. During these meetings, members had the opportunity to read, understand, and discuss the Word of God and to relate it to their everyday lives. Fellowship in small groups also provided an opportunity for members to know one another more closely and to build stronger relationships.
Bible Study became an important part of the spiritual development of the congregation. Through these activities, members did not only participate in Sunday worship, but also had opportunities to grow through ongoing study of the Word of God. The Cell Group provided a space to strengthen fellowship, pray for one another, and deepen spiritual life. In this way, these activities became one of the foundations for building a congregation whose spiritual life could continue to develop in a more purposeful manner.
4.3 Sunday School
Ministry to children became one of the important areas of development at GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja. Every Sunday afternoon, Sunday School was held regularly. Average attendance ranged from 20 to 25 children. They were ministered to through Bible stories, worship songs, creative learning activities, and various programs appropriate to their age groups. The presence of children in these activities became an important part of congregational life and demonstrated that the ministry was beginning to reach different age groups within the community.
Sunday School was not merely an additional activity within the life of the church, but also an important part of nurturing faith from an early age. Through regular ministry, children were introduced to the Word of God and guided to understand Christian values. Therefore, children's ministry became an important investment in preparing the future generation of the church. The continued growth of Sunday School ministry also became an area of ongoing attention in the development of GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja.
4.4 Youth Ministry
Youth ministry was conducted every Saturday afternoon as a means of nurturing and developing the younger generation. During these gatherings, the youth participated in worship and discussions concerning their faith and the various challenges they encountered in everyday life. The teaching and discussions also addressed matters related to friendships and relationships, social media, and other issues faced by today's young generation. Through these gatherings, the youth were given opportunities to grow in faith while also developing positive relationships with one another.
As the ministry developed, several young people began to participate in various areas of service. They became involved in worship, music, prayer, and other ministry activities according to their abilities. Their involvement became part of the process of learning and preparing the next generation of ministry leaders. By giving young people opportunities to serve, the church not only nurtured their spiritual lives but also began preparing them to take greater responsibility in ministry in the future.
4.5 Appointment of the Ministry Team
To support the growing ministry of the congregation, several local members were entrusted to become part of the ministry team of GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja. This appointment was intended to ensure that various church activities could be carried out in a more organized manner, with individuals taking responsibility for specific areas of ministry. These entrusted servants became an important part of congregational life and contributed to the implementation of worship services and other ministry activities.
The ministry team entrusted with these responsibilities at that time consisted of:
1. Mauli Ritonga – Church Elder
2. Desnar Tumanggor – Worship Coordinator
3. Unggul Ritonga – Sunday School Coordinator
4. Maria Tumanggor – Youth Coordinator
5. Fania Tumanggor – Multimedia
The formation of this team became part of the process of developing local ministry. With local ministry workers taking responsibility, church activities could be carried out in a more organized and sustainable manner. They not only assisted with the implementation of various activities, but also became part of the process of building congregational life in Pearaja. The organization of ministry was therefore an important step in preparing GBI PRJ Sion Sumut to continue growing and carrying out its ministry in the midst of the community.
CHAPTER V
STRUCTURAL RECOGNITION AND HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
The ministry of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut continued to develop and entered a more structured stage. After going through the processes of pioneering, construction, challenges, changes in worship locations, and the establishment of regular congregational activities, the ministry entered a new stage of organizational development within Gereja Bethel Indonesia. Administrative recognition became an important part of this journey. At the same time, the life of the congregation continued to be built through worship, spiritual development, children's and youth ministries, and the involvement of local ministry workers. All these processes provided a foundation for continuing the ministry with hope for the future.
5.1 GBI PRJ Sion as a Branch of GBI JPS Jakarta
The ministry journey then entered an important stage in its structural relationship with Gereja Bethel Indonesia. In April 2025, GBI PRJ Sion Sumut was reported to the BPD GBI Tapanuli, North Sumatra, as a branch of GBI JPS No. 22 North Jakarta. This process became part of the administrative organization of a ministry that had been pioneered over many years. Previously, the ministry had developed through visits, family ministry, worship services, and congregational activities in the Pearaja area. Through this reporting process, the ministry became more formally organized within the institutional structure of GBI.
On April 20, 2025, a Letter of Registration (Surat Tanda Lapor/STL) No. 020/S-XVII/SP/BPD-42/IV was issued. This letter became an important part of the administrative documentation of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut. With the issuance of the STL, the ministry of GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja was recorded as part of the GBI ministry structure in North Sumatra and as a branch of GBI JPS Jakarta. In this process, the support of Rev. Rev. Juanto Nainggolan, S.Th., as Chairman of the Humbang Tapanuli Regional Representative Office (Perwil), also became part of the journey toward the ministry's structural recognition.
5.2 A Ministry That Continues to Grow
GBI PRJ Sion Sumut remains in a process of growth. The church building that had previously been planned and whose construction had begun has not yet been fully completed, and therefore the ministry continues to operate in a simple setting. However, limitations in facilities and location have not become a reason to stop congregational life. Sunday worship continues to be held, Bible Study and Cell Group meetings continue, Sunday School continues to serve children, and youth ministry continues to be developed. All these activities are part of the gradual process of congregational growth.
The growth of the ministry can also be seen through the involvement of local ministry workers in carrying out various responsibilities within the church. Children continue to learn to know the Word of God, young people continue to receive spiritual guidance, while adult members continue to strengthen their faith through fellowship and worship. Local ministry workers are also increasingly taking part according to the responsibilities entrusted to them. Therefore, the growth of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut is not measured only by the construction of a church building, but also by the growth of congregational life and the continued development of ministry within the community.
5.3 Hope for the Future
The hope for the future is that GBI PRJ Sion Sumut will continue to develop into a healthy church, grow in the Word of God, and become a blessing to the surrounding community. It is hoped that the construction of the church building that has already begun can continue when God opens the way and provides the resources needed. However, beyond the physical construction, the greater hope is that the spiritual life of the congregation will continue to be built and strengthened. The church is not merely a place where people gather and worship, but also a place where believers are nurtured and encouraged to grow in faith in Christ.
Therefore, the ministry in the years ahead will continue to focus on congregational development, evangelism, discipleship, children's ministry, youth ministry, and the church's involvement in the community. Each area of ministry is expected to develop according to the needs and capacity of the congregation. The construction of the church building remains part of the hope for the future, but the building of people's lives is of even greater importance. A building can be constructed with various materials, but the church as the body of Christ is built through people who believe, grow in faith, serve one another, and live in the love of God. With this spirit, it is hoped that the journey of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut will continue from generation to generation.
CONCLUSION
The journey of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut is a story of a long process of ministry. Beginning with ministry visits in 2010, the journey developed through relationships with the local community, family ministry, evangelistic revival services, prayer, and spiritual development. In 2019, social and cultural relationships grew stronger, one indication of which was the acceptance of the Nahampun clan name by Rev. Dr. Syaiful Hamzah. In January 2022, a piece of land was purchased and prepared for ministry, followed by the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of GBI PRJ Sion Pearaja in December 2022. In the years that followed, the construction faced various limitations and challenges, yet the ministry continued. In 2025, a house was prepared as a temporary place of worship, and on Sunday, March 23, 2025, the First Sunday Worship Service was held with approximately 25 people, consisting of local families, children, youth, and ministry supporters. Following this, the ministry developed through Bible Study and Cell Group meetings, Sunday School, Youth Worship, and the formation of a local ministry team. All these stages demonstrate that a church can grow through a long process. A church does not always begin with a large building or complete facilities; it can begin with a journey, a simple home, a few people gathering together, and hearts that desire to serve God. The history of GBI PRJ Sion Sumut is a testimony to the importance of faithfulness, patience, sacrifice, and perseverance in carrying out the ministry. What began as ministry visits eventually developed into a congregation, and what was once only a desire eventually became a tangible ministry. May GBI PRJ Sion Sumut continue to be a place where the name of the Lord Jesus Christ is glorified, the Word of God is proclaimed, souls are served, children are nurtured, young people are equipped, families are strengthened, and the community experiences the love of Christ. The journey is not yet complete; there are still souls to be reached, generations to be nurtured, and ministry to be continued. May what was begun in faith continue in faithfulness and be brought to completion for the glory of God. Soli Deo Gloria.
